The flavor of hazelnuts (aka filberts) is greatly enhanced when you roast them in the oven. Unlike other nuts, they require the extra step of removing the excess skins. The following step by step instructions will take you through the whole process, leaving you with wonderfully toasted hazelnuts to snack on or use in your favorite recipes.
How to Roast and Skin Hazelnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Shell hazelnuts (if necessary) and place raw hazelnuts on a rimmed baking pan.
Roast in preheated oven for 20 – 30 minutes. (depending on your oven temp and other factors, such as size)
The hazelnut skins should be blistered and the inside golden brown before they are removed from the oven.
Immediately, while they are still hot, place the hazelnuts on a large, flour-sack type dish towel.
Wrap them up in the towel, twisting the top, and allow them to steam for a few minutes.
Leaving them wrapped in the towel, massage the hazelnuts to remove the skins that want to come off. They don’t usually come off completely.
Pick out the hazelnuts and discard the skins.
Now they are ready for Spiced Hazelnuts, salads, oatmeal. etc.
